Porsche Weight Reduction Part 1

This past offseason, We’ve had the pleasure of rebuilding and this 1995 Porsche 993. An unfortanute off track excursion left some of the body panels a tad tweaked. We took the offseaon time to come up with a new Roll cage setup for the car and all new Fiberglass body panels. Follow us as we cut this car up and bring her back to life.

The build starts with checking the new body panels for fitment and potential problem areas. We intend on cutting the roof off of this car and removing the entire roll cage stucture for a more updated version. The doors, ineterior, electronics fedners, hood, bumpers, and the windows were all removed. A rough visual check was made in hopes the new roof is going to line up where the old one did.

Next the Chassis was braced across the width of the car as well as the lenght of the car to prevent anything from moving as we removed important parts of the undibody Structure. Lots of grinding and prepping the metal to be welded. Tubing was cut and welded in place to prevent the chassis from collapsing on itself.. Later these bars and welds will be removed as the new Roll cage starts to tie the Chassis back together.

Once the Chassis was fully braced from moving anywhere, the rood was roughly fitted over the existing one to find a nice seam point to cut the existing one off at. Double and triple checked, It was cut with a sawzall at the a, b, c pillars. Now with the roof gone, we were able to confirm our cuts and check just how well this aftermarket piece was going to fit.

The next step in this build started with more weight reduction as we removed the Rear Qaurter panels and good bit of the unibody structure forward of the front suspension. All the spot welds had to be carefully grinded away and preserved on all flanges of the body panels. A very tideous process that pays off in the long run when attaching the new body panels.

Then We started prepping the chassis/floor for the new roll cage. That started with grinding away paint and building the base plates for the cage. Cardboard mockups are used to get an idea of what works and looks good.

Stay Tuned for Part Two of this build as we build out the roll cage and start putting this beast back together….

Next month, Goliad will host the years first Tx mile event. After the Underground Racing Lamborghini Flipped at high speed last year, it was decided to that we would do everything we oculd to make our car as safe as possible in the mean time. The engine was torn down to confirm everything was still happy and some cam changes were favored to help rev the engine higher.

The Roof of the 1800 was removed to access the top of the roll cage. We double checked any welds that were difficult to reach before, and added a considerable amount of gussets to any structural connection. An X-brace was added to the top halo to ease our minds, as well as a few more bars to a few spots that will keep the driver safe in the event of a rollover.

We also consulted with the manufacturer of our parachute to see if there was anything that could be improved for safe measure. So many of the cars at the Tx Mile seem to have improperly setup parachutes. They are either way to low, high or mounted completely bass-ackwards. Makes you wonder why cars are flipping over and sliding all over the place.

This year the shop manager at ART will pilot the car down the mile. This will be his first year driving a car at the event, we wish him luck! We are really hoping for a 250mph pass. Last year everyone felt the car ran at maybe 50-75%, so we have high expectations.

We previously tuned the car on one 02 sensor for each bank of cylinders with individual EGT sensors. This year we are tuning the car on ten individual o2 sensors, 4 different intake temps, and 6 more additional pressure inputs to monitor even more!.

Check out the Gallery for Tons of pics of the build of this car.

wish us luck in our quest for 250+mph next month!

Last week at PS, we spent our time adding some safety equipment to one our one-off monster Turbo Builds.
Safety is a major concern on and off the track. Most tracks wont even allow you on their premises without the right safety equipment. A street driven vehicle certainly has different needs and demands that need to be met to keep the driver and occupants safe.

This roll cage install was done to a 2006 Jeep SRT8 that had previously been in the shop for the coolest Turbo and Motor combo a Jeep SUV has ever seen! All the functionality was kept in mind of the factory interior. With that in mind, the seats had to move their entire travel, head room had to stay the same for our tall driver, and last but not least the LCD screens had to remain functional!

This Pristine 2008 Dodge Viper ACR was brought to us for a complete Roll Cage install. The Car Is undergoing a facelift to be reborn as a track ready ACR-X. We had the priviledge of replicating the Roll cage in this car (aside from a few minor Changes and TIG welding).

We recieved the car with very little of the body assembled so we could work in and around the car. It’s really exciting to see these cars taken apart this far. We learned quite a bit about how the cars are assembled.

We made a few changes on the Roll cage design to better suit a passenger seat as well as TIG welding the entire things. The roush built cages in all of the ACR-X’s were MIG welded.

Well its now December, a good months after the mile and the single turbo FGT made its debut. Unfortunately the event didn’t treat the car too well and we winded up chasing bugs down all weekend. Although, we did manage a few 215+ mph passes on low boost. Seeing the car go down the track was enough to put big smiles on the crew after the long month of assembling the car.

The setup put down just over 1040 rwhp at 19 lbs of boost at 6800. Shaking down the car has shown us how much power and boost we actually have left to add to the car. The new destroked 5.0 liter motor should make its way into the car sometime February in time for the march 2010 Texas mile at about 1500 rwhp :O

The days leading up to the Mile, the owner had the car wrapped in a urban snow camo to really set the car off and stand out. Enjoy the pictures of the process!

The Car sports two custom TIAL built gt4202′s with extensive machine work done to make them fit in these tightly packed Vipers. Each turbo alone, being good for over 1000whp+ will easily make this viper run with the big dogs.

Aside from the wild engine and turbo setup, the car runs a big brake upgrade from Stoptech. The Exhuast is a Full 4″ Stainless Mandrel bent custom exhuast with two stage Burns Stainless Mufflers.
